News Modals

In New World, News Modals provide players with the latest updates and current events.

I used our proprietary engine for character posing, setting up weapons and attachments for raw capture. I would then port screenshots into Photoshop for compositing and post-processing, adding additional VFX like fire, magic, dust to bring more energy into the scene.

It was always important to me that I balance the authenticity of what you can do in the game with how it feels.

MTX Images

Used to promote exclusive content bought from the in-game store; usually armors, weapons, or mounts.

These were captured similarly to News Modal images. When creating a Store Product or MTX image, I always strived for capturing the personality of each armor piece by choosing the right emote for posing.

Transmog Token Bundles

A batch of bundle renders I modeled and textured for multiple tiers of Transmog token purchases. Ultimately, it was decided to simplify the storefront by promoting a single token icon, so these renders went unused. It was still a valuable exploration, and I don't mind throwing out work if it leads to a more optimal experience for the user.

The Transformers Pitch

Render used as a pitch material to Hasbro to secure a deal for Transformers / Minecraft DLC

I was given an exciting opportunity to develop renders of a few gigantic IP's from Hasbro to be used in conversation with their representatives for establishing a deal to create Minecraft DLC of their brands. Transformers was one I was particular stoked for as a longtime fan.

To do the Autobots and Decepticons justice, I dove into as much reference material I could dig up on their G1 designs, looking at original turnarounds of concept art and screenshots of the 80's cartoon.

I modeled and textured each character seen above, then assembled them into a cosmic landscape that pulled them into the forefront, harkening back to some amazing illustrations you'd see on the toys' box art.

The end result really pleased Hasbro and helped finalize the deal. A Transformers DLC was later created after my time at Minecraft. I wasn't around to work on it sadly, but having made the initial imagery to stir the conversation is a big point of pride for me, and the thought will always bring a "spark" of joy.

Marketing Art

Minecraft used marketing assets such as these to promote new playable worlds, skins, and adventures within both Education Edition and the main game.

I created these using tools like Mineways to extract geometry from the game and import them into Maya or Blender. From there, I would rig characters for posing and render. Renders would then get touched up in Photoshop and distributed in many different dimensions or crops for marketing solutions via web, email, and more.

Print

For Halloween I was given an exciting challenge to design a mask that was print-friendly, easy for kids to make, and durable enough to wear. Where I ended up was something that required only scissors, no glue to hold anything together. Designed with basic squash folds provided these with triangular strength to wear like glasses.
